D1.2 Geographical Information Systems in Water Resources
Nowadays Geoinformatics play an important role in monitoring and designing strategies for water resources sustainability. The course includes a student project implemented with GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS) in order to help students familiarize with GIS skills such as: hydrologic analysis using a digital elevation model, spatial database creation, data collection and editing, map georeferenced, heads up digitization, raster to vector conversion, digital Elevation Model creation, aspect and slope Calculation, flow direction and flow accumulation calculation, watershed delineation, stream network delineation and classification, calculation of stream network length and slope, visualization and map creation. This course provides an introduction to GIS in relation to water resources management. The course syllabus consists of the following topics:
- Introduction to GIS
- The nature of Spatial data
- Spatial data models (Raster and Vector)
- Spatial data structures,
- Data input and editing, Manual and automatic digitization, Vector to Raster and Raster to Vector conversion,
- Coordinate Systems and Map Projections, Georeferencing,
- Spatial Database design and creation,
- Interoperability – Standards – Spatial data from different sources,
- Spatial Data quality,
- Generalization,
- Modeling surfaces – Spatial Interpolation, Analysis of Surfaces,
- Spatial Data analysis, Map elements and principles of map symbolization
