Principles of water cycle and pollution if the water environment (oxygen depletion, eutrophication, microbial polluton, toxicity). The Integrated approach for the Management of the Aquatic Environment and Water Resources in the Framework of the Water Directive. Analysis of the Directive and the daughter Directives (groundwater, priority pollutants, monitoring programs, quality standards, chemical and biological indices, economic analysis, participatory mechanisms, river basin management plans, programs of measures). Water conservation and demand management in view of droughts and climatic change. Economic instruments. The experience gained from the implementation of the Directive in Europe and Greece.
