C1.5 Environmental Management of Coastal Zone and Ports
Firstly, the international and Greek legislation, the environmental policies, and the International Conventions, including MARPOL (The International Convention for Prevention of Marine Pollution for Ships), for the protection of the marine environment are presented. The description of the effects of climate change on coastal zone and ports follows and mitigation measures are presented. Then, the management of ship waste and other cargo in ports is examined and in particular (a) the categories of ship waste and their integrated management in ports, (b) the relevant Institutional Framework with reference to the international MARPOL Convention, (c) ) the required waste management infrastructure and (d) the preparation of plans for the receipt and management of ships approaching ports. The pollution of coastal zone and ports is the next topic, that focuses on coastal pollution from oil spill accidents and the response methods that are used for decontamination. In particular, the mathematical models of oil slick behavior are described, that range from simple oil slick models to more complex models, such as GNOME and OSCAR. Also, the risk of oil spill accidents using oil spill models is analyzed and real cases are presented. Then, the technology of management of ballast water is presented with emphasis on modern techniques and practical applications. The course concludes with the environmental management and evaluation of the ports with reference to the EMAS and ISO14001 systems. The structure of the course is as follows:
- Legislation and environmental policies for the protection of the marine environment.
- Effects of Climate Change on coastal zone and ports and mitigation measures.
- Ship waste management.
- Pollution of Coastal Zone and Ports – Oil spills.
- Management of ballast water.
- Environmental port management and evaluation.
